Drone Busters: Don’t Let a Screen Tell You to Give Up

After several years of heartbreak and close calls, Daniel Booher finally connected on an absolute giant. He believed he had made a good shot, and the ground search reached a wound bed before the trail ran out.

Daniel Booher’s recovered buck after Merlin finished the search

Daniel called SKYZ the LIMIT photography Drone Team. After about 2½ hours of searching and $250 spent, the buck was still unrecovered.

But Daniel could not shake what he had seen. He believed that deer should be dead, and he was not ready to give up. Even after paying for the aerial search, he called a dog team and gave Merlin the Magician an opportunity.

The answer was 158 yards. That is how far the buck lay from the last known bed. From where we found him, you could see the bed the hunters had already located.

Thermal cameras can be useful when they have a view of an animal, but vegetation can block that view. An unsuccessful thermal search does not establish that a deer is not there. On this recovery, Merlin followed the trail to the answer.

Daniel deserved a lot of credit for trusting what he knew about the shot and continuing the search. His decision gave us the chance to help put a remarkable buck on the tailgate.

Huge congratulations to Daniel, and thank you for trusting Merlin and Send in the Hounds to finish the story. If a search comes up empty and you still believe your deer is down, call a tracking dog before giving up.
